Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the temporomandibular joint: A case study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign but locally aggressive proliferative disorder, commonly arising from the synovium of long bone joints, tendon sheaths and bursae. PVNS is rarely found in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), with around 52 reported cases in the current English literature. It is most commonly found in the knee joint, followed by the hip, ankle, small joints of the hands and feet, wrist, shoulder and elbow. Case study: This case report describes a 37 year old Cantonese lady who presented with a progressively enlarging mass at her right TMJ. Initial imaging and biopsies initially favoured a primary salivary gland neoplasm, with recommendations for surgical excision. Subsequent ultrasound core guided biopsy showed appearances consistent with a diffuse giant cell tumour (pigmented villonodular tenosynovitis). The patient underwent a superficial parotidectomy with clear surgical margins and no evidence of neoplasia in frozen sections. Conclusions: This case highlights the challenges involved in the diagnosis and management of this rare condition, showing how its clinical presentation can mimic a parotid mass. Radiological and histological investigations can often give conflicting results. Long term follow up is required given the high chance of local recurrence and potential for aggressive change. Second Metatarsophalangeal Joint Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis: A case report
Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis (PVNS) is an uncommon condition of the foot. PVS of the foot accounts for 2% of all cases. We present the case of a 26 year-old male who was found to have pigmented villonodular synovitis of the second metatarsophalangeal joint. Although a high incidence is reported in the literature, the patient underwent surgical excision with no known reoccurrence to date. Fi...
متن کاملPigmented villonodular synovitis of the temporomandibular joint: diagnostic imaging and endovascular therapeutic embolization of a rare head and neck tumor.
We report a case of pigmented villonodular synovitis involving the temporomandibular joint that presented as a rapidly growing tumor with extension through the skull base into the middle cranial fossa. The case is of interest not only because of the unusual extensive infiltration of this tumor but also because of the role modern diagnostic imaging and endovascular therapeutic techniques played ...

Background: Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a tumor that arises from the synovial membrane of the joint or tendon sheaths. Two main forms include a diffuse form that involves the whole synovial lining of a joint, bursa, or tendon sheath, and a less common localized form. The diffuse form typically involves the large joints, while the localized one typically occurs around the small joints of...
متن کاملArthroscopic approach for treating a pigmented villonodular sinovitis of TMJ. A case report
The present report describes the case of a 29-year-old man referred to our service for TMJ pain and progressive reduction of the mouth opening. Differential diagnostics included rheumatologic diseases, monoarthritis and intraarticular lumps. In this line, a face CT scan and a MRI of TMJ were carried out in order to ensure a proper diagnosis. These tests showed a solid lesion into the joint cavi...
متن کاملPigmented Villonodular Synovitis in Temporomandibular Joint: Image features and Differential Diagnosis
Pigmented villonodular synovitis in temporomandibular joint is an uncommon disorder. There are only 39 cases reported in the English literature. Here we report a case with this disease. The patient was a 52-year-old female suffering from progressive right pre-auricular pain and limitation in open mouth for 2 years. Physical examination revealed a palpable nodule in the right preauricular area. ...
